Online Computer Training from ATSAcademic Technology Services is pleased to announce the Year 2000 OnLine Computer Training site http://www.computertraining.ucla.edu for UCLA students, staff, and faculty. We are in the third year of our agreement with SmartForce (formerly CBT Systems, Inc) and want to encourage you to share this site with others here at UCLA who could benefit from these self-paced, online computer training resources. Courses range from highly technical specialties to those for new users needing help with basic productivity tools. For the complete list of courses see http://www.computertraining.ucla.edu/2000courses.htm It is important that we evaluate the value of these courses, so we have included a survey at the site....please complete the survey and encourage others to do so as well http://www.ats.ucla.edu/cfapps/cbtsurvey.cfm. Help with SAS from ATSWe recently announced that the SAS Online documentation is available over the web by visiting http://sasdocs.ats.ucla.edu/ . These pages contain the SAS documentation in the form of web pages. We now also have the SAS manuals as Adobe Acrobat .pdf files available at http://saspdf.ats.ucla.edu/ . These .pdf files are only available to those accessing them from .ucla.edu (i.e. from a computer on campus, or when dialing in via Bruin Online). To view or print these files, you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 or higher. We also welcome you to visit our SAS web pages at http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/sas/ containing a variety of pages to help you learn and use SAS, including pages at all levels from SAS beginner to SAS expert. SPSS Classes at ATS (formerly OAC)The Spring 2000 SPSS Classes are now open for signups. You can view the schedule and signup for classes by visiting http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/ and then clicking on "View Class Descriptions, Schedule, and Sign Up for Classes". While you are visiting http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/ , we invite you to visit the SPSS, SAS, Stata and SPSS web pages. The SPSS pages contain the class notes that will be used in the class, as well as other pages to help you learn and use SPSS. If you have comments or suggestions, please email Michael Mitchell at mnm@ucla.edu. SPSS 10 is coming to the Mac!The company which makes SPSS has decided to develop a mac version of SPSS 10. It should be released in summer. If it is compatible with the computers in the labs, ETU will try to install it by next fall. Apple Share IP Access to the Home ServerYou can now access your files on the home server from any mac with an internet connection by using Apple Share IP. Click on the link above for more information. SPSS 6.0 to be removed from GSE&IS 118SPSS 6.0 has been causing numerous problems in the GSE&IS lab, the most notable of which are problems saving documents. This problem typically occurs after SPSS crashes for a user on a computer. The next user of the computer is not able to save any documents in any application as a result. They only hear an alert beep. Since SPSS 6.0 is no longer supported on the Mac, we have no choice but to remove it from the macs in GSE&IS 118. SPSS 9.0, however, will be available for use using the Windows NT side of the macs in GSE&IS 118. For more information on this see the Windows NT page or the SPSS with Virtual PC page. Lab Closure for the Holiday BreakThe GSE&IS Computer Labs will be closed during the Holiday Break from December 18,1999 through January 4, 2000. This closure is necessary so that ETU can update the software that is on the computers and resolve some of the problems that have come up over the quarter (see items below). The Home Server will also be taken down and serviced intermittently during this period. If you have important documents that you wish to work on from home during the break, please make copies of them, either to a floppy or zip disk, or to your home computer hard drive. You can see the lab schedules on the Moore 3120 and GSE&IS 118 Calendars. Problems with Eudora Crashing? Many students have reported crashes when accessing their BOL accounts using saved Eudora preferences on the server. We have determined that the cause of this problem is a conflict in the newest version of Eudora Pro. During the maintenance scheduled for the break, ETU will install an older version of Eudora Pro on the computers to remedy the problem. This change should not affect you. You won't have to change anything about your preferences. Problems Saving to Disks? Some students have reported difficulty working with documents saved on disks. Due to the unreliable nature of the floppy disk medium, many problems can occur. Our strong suggestion is that you do not work directly with floppy disks. The optimal solution is for you to first transfer the files that you would like to work on to your Home Server folder or to the Temp Folder on the Hard Drive. Second, edit the document, saving every minute or so. Finally, when you are finished editing the document, copy it back to the floppy disk, replacing the original. Changing your PasswordWhen you change your password, your new password must be at least 5 characters (numbers or letters) long. Instructions for changing your password can be found on the Password Change Help page. Accessing the Labs as a GuestThere is a new procedure for logging into a lab computer as guest. For the GSE&IS 118 Lab, you need to use the special account "gseis-guest".For the Moore 3120 Lab, you need to use the special account "moore-guest". A password is not necessary for either of the special accounts. Please note that you will no longer be able to log in as Guest by using the radio button. Guest access will be available for the time period that the lab is reserved for only. If you would like extra time before or after the reservation, you should apply for a lab account. Apply for a Lab AccountYou can use this online form to apply for a lab account online. This account will give you access to the Moore and GSE&IS labs, and to the NT Domain in the GSE&IS lab. You are still required to go to ETU in Moore 3027 with your Bruin ID to receive your account. OAC Computer ClassesOAC is offering computer classes and workshops this fall, starting in November. Advanced registration is required. For more information, go to: http://www.oac.ucla.edu/classes/class_fall99.htm If you need to contact the Educational Technology Unit (ETU), you can do so by visiting Moore Hall Room 3027 or GSE&IS Room 213, calling 825-1911 or by sending an e-mail to etu@gseis.ucla.edu |
