Directions for Windows (all versions)
Important Notice: The old connection method (through Map Network Drive option) is no longer available when connecting off UCLA campus. Since MS Windows does not
support connections over SFTP (Secure FTP) protocol, all users are required to use third party software. WinSCP is
a recommended free software that was extensively tested in GSE&IS network envionment.
Steps 1-7 only need to be done once as a preliminary step to accessing the server. If you've already completed installation (steps 1-7), proceed to step 8.
Download WinSCP from http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/download.php and install it by double-clicking on a file.
During setup, select Explorer-like interface 1 to be able to work with your files the same way you're used under Windows. The default option, Norton Commander interface, will give you a window layout similar to the outdated MS DOS program Norton Commander.

Run WinSCP from the desktop 1 or from the Start menu.

On the login screen, enter students.gseis.ucla.edu in the "Host name" field 1. If you are faculty or staff, replace the word "students" with "faculty" or "staff". In the "Port number" 2 enter 7788. Enter your account name 3 and password 4, select SFTP protocol 5 and click Login 6. This is the same username/password you use when you log in at Moore 3120 or GSE&IS 118. If you don't want the program to remember your password, leave the field 4 blank. You will be asked for it every time you login.

For the first time you're connecting to a server, you will be prompted to save the encryption key. Click Yes to continue.

Once you're logged in, click on the Save session 1 and enter description on the dialog 2.

Close the WinSCP program.
Run WinSCP from the desktop 1 or from the Start menu.

Select your connection 1 from the list and click Login. 2

Files can be copied from the server simply by dragging them from WinSCP window onto the desktop, My Computer or any other folder visible on screen.
Please do not open documents from server with direct double-click in the WinSCP window, as this may cause problem with some programs, namely Microsoft Word. Instead, copy files to your desktop, edit it and then copy it back onto server.
